Flying at Lacken

All paraglider and hang glider pilots intending to fly at Lacken, near Blessington, Co. Wicklow should call Casement Aerodrome ATC 01 403 7514 to alert them of their activities.

There have been a number of instances of helicopters flying low over paragliders and hang gliders at Lacken. Such encounters could prove fatal to both paraglider / hang glider and helicopter pilots alike. Following recent discussions with Casement Aerodrome it has been agreed that anyone planning to fly at Lacken should contact Casement ATC on 01 403 7514 and advise them that paragliders and/or hang gliders are active in the area, and ask them to alert all powered aircraft not to approach within at least 1km of the area.

It should be noted that Lacken is in Class G, uncontrolled airspace, and that it is not necessary to seek permission to fly there. Contacting Casement ATC is purely a safety measure aimed at alerting powered aircraft pilots that paragliders and hang gliders are operating in the area. The Dublin Gliding Club have been using this system for some years with success.
